Program of study overview

Aims

The aim of this minor is to provide students with a foundational knowledge in the GIS. It also aims to develop a range of transferable research, analytical and communication skills including the capacity to:

  • Understand and apply relevant scientific principles
  • Retrieve and present scientific information, including communicating effectively with a variety of audiences in written, spoken and cartographic form
  • Analyse and evaluate spatial and aspatial data within a GIS
  • Work independently and take responsibility for updating and adapting their knowledge and skills
  • Work effectively and productively within a team

The minor provides the foundations that will underpin ongoing professional development, preparing graduates for further study in the discipline or another science or non-science related discipline.

Learning outcomes

On completion students will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of GIS, its historical development, capacity, advantages, and ethical considerations
2.
Analyse relationships between spatial and aspatial entities using GIS
3.
Demonstrate an understanding of Earth observation theory, its relationship with GIS and integration of GIS
4.
Communicate findings to a variety of audiences in written, spoken and cartographic form
5.
Interact effectively as part of a team in order to achieve common goals.
6.
Appreciate the importance of ethical behaviour in scholarship and professional activity
