Aims

The English major aims to:

  • Equip students with a thorough grounding in the content and concerns of literature and writing practice throughout the epochs
  • Furnish students with the skills required to apply their learning in educational and professional settings
  • Produce graduates who are able to communicate effectively in a range of mediums, and who are able to analyse critically different texts in a range of situations and contexts
  • Endeavour to encourage learning and transferable skills in both independent and collaborative contexts
  • Encourage students to connect across boundaries and value ethical behaviour through the study of quality literature and the praxis of creative writing

Learning outcomes

On completion students will be able to:

Assess the tone, content, ideas, and context of a range of texts

Argue complex, logical propositions effectively both orally in writing
3.
Appraise literature and creative writing throughout the epochs
4.
Critique how the cultural and literary merit of literature and other creative works are, and have been, defined

Evaluate a range of factors in developing an interpretation of literary texts
