Aims

The course aims to: 

  • Prepare students for specialised practice in a range of acute health care environments 
  • Facilitate development of specialised knowledge, skills and attributes for application in the acute mental health nursing environment 
  • Meet international, national, state and territory strategic health care goals in acute care nursing environments 

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:
1.
Critically analyse contemporary concepts and theories to facilitate mental health nursing care
2.
Implement clinical reasoning to support the delivery of evidence-based therapeutic and pharmacological interventions in providing holistic mental health nursing care
3.
Demonstrate the communication skills required of a mental health nurse to work collaboratively with mental health consumers and carers
4.
Critically evaluate professional practice to enhance decision making to support consumer outcomes
5.
Integrate ethical and professional standards relevant to mental health nursing practice

Student progression rules

Failure to complete the course within four consecutive semesters or the award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion or in 9 units or more, may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.
