Aims

The course aims to enable individuals to become well-rounded mental health professionals, capable of working in a variety of mental health-related roles with the ability to develop holistic plans to achieve mental well-being. 

 Specifically, the course aims to: 

  • Facilitate the development of specialised knowledge, skills and attributes for application in acute mental health nursing environments 
  • Enable practitioners to analyse and apply evidence-based practice in mental health nursing practice

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:
1.
Consolidate and synthesise advanced practice knowledge, skills and competencies that enhance the capacity to provide holistic nursing care for people who experience symptoms of mental illness
2.
Apply an evidence-based approach to clinical leadership in mental health
3.
Analyse the range of interventions and modalities of care and the impact of these interventions for at least one vulnerable group within the acute or community healthcare settings
4.
Critique a range of social, political and economic issues in the wider health care system affects the health of specific populations and their access to mental health care
5.
Analyse how policy development and strategies for mental health care delivery influence access to health care and intersectoral collaboration

Student progression rules

Failure to complete the course within 4 consecutive years or the award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion, may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.
