Overview

The Bachelor of Health Sciences requires 3 years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). The course is offered by the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

The course articulates with the 36 unit Diploma in Health Sciences and the 72 unit Associate Degree in Health Sciences, and the sequentially developed topics enable progression through the awards.

The course is also available as an exit award from the double degrees Bachelor of Health Sciences, Master of Occupational Therapy or Bachelor of Health Sciences, Master of Physiotherapy, subject to meeting the requirements in the Program of Study below.

Program of study overview

To qualify for the Bachelor of Health Sciences, a student must complete 108 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below.

Not all topics are necessarily available each year.

No more than 45 units of level 1 topics and no less than 27 units of level 3 topics may be included in the 108 units for the degree.

Upon completion of 36 or 72 units respectively a student may choose to exit with Diploma in Health Sciences or the Associate Degree in Health Sciences, subject to meeting the program of study for that award.

Aims

The Bachelor of Health Sciences is a multidisciplinary degree that aims to comprehensively prepare you for a career in the diverse modern healthcare environment. The flexible program of study begins with core topics providing a fundamental understanding of anatomy and physiology, health systems, and social and psychological determinants of health and wellbeing essential to health practice. Elective topics provide you with the opportunity to tailor your learning experience to a broad range of health-related topics, or a more focused program of study. You will develop the ability to critically approach new challenges in contemporary healthcare, and be equipped to enter the workforce in a variety of health related sectors, or pursue postgraduate studies in a health related discipline.

Student progression rules

Failure to complete the course within eight consecutive years or the award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion, may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.
