Aims

This award aims to provide students with:

  • An extended knowledge of both the theoretical and practical aspects of data science and recent developments in the field 
  • A mastery of the tools and technologies used in the professional application of data science principles 
  • A demonstrated understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities and a commitment to them 
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences 
  • An ability to critically analyse and evaluate data stores to creatively solve enterprise problems 
  • An awareness of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of data analytics 
  • An ability to work professionally as an individual and as a member of multi-disciplinary teams 
  • An ability to undertake research towards creating solutions to problems in data science applications 
  • An understanding of the need for lifelong learning and the capacity to do so in the context of ensuring sustained relevancy of skills for future professional roles as a data scientist. 

The award provides the foundations that will underpin ongoing professional development, preparing students for admission to a research higher degree or for a career as a computing professional.
