Aims

The topic aims to:

  • Explore the construct of learning disabilities and Multitiered Systems of Support in relation to effective planning and teaching for students with learning disabilities (SWLD)
  • Introduce preservice teachers to complex connections between academic learning, behaviour, student‐teacher relationships and the educational environment
  • Examine the role of disability legislation, inclusive policies, instructional practices and learning environments in promoting academic success and emotional wellbeing for students with learning disabilities
  • Explore research informed perspectives related to high‐quality schooling for students with learning disabilities

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Discuss learning disabilities in the Australian education context with a focus on typical characteristics of learners with learning disabilities
2.
Integrate knowledge of learning disabilities, educational supports, research‐informed teaching practices, and legislative requirements into a holistic understanding of high‐quality education for SWLD
3.
Illustrate ways an individual’s academic, behaviour and emotional needs are considered in the design and implementation of a Multitiered Systems of Support framework
4.
Prioritise with justification, instructional approaches, supports and services to ensure students with learning disabilities are appropriately challenged and supported
5.
Appraise data to solve problems and make well‐reasoned judgments related to effective school processes and productive learning environments for students with learning disabilities
