Aims
This topic aims to develop:
- Cultivate a research-informed understanding of the need for teachers to develop relational competencies in themselves and their students in order to create and maintain positive learning environments
- Prepare preservice teachers to build effective relationships among learners, educators, parents, and colleagues within schools, systems and outside agencies
- Equip preservice teachers with contemporary knowledge, understandings and skills related to fostering the social and emotional development of diverse young people
- Equip preservice teachers to foster self-awareness, personal resources, resilience and coping strategies for personal and relational wellbeing for diverse young people
- Enable critical appraisal of approaches to managing behaviour and learning environments
- Establish a clear articulation between teaching philosophies, theoretical beliefs, and specific teaching approaches related to creating and maintaining positive learning environments.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Apply developing relational competencies to plan for effective classroom management and positive learning environments

Evaluate a range of theories and approaches to behaviour and classroom management
3.
Appraise universal frameworks for supporting positive behaviour and managing behavioural difficulties, inclusive of evidence-based primary prevention strategies

Synthesise research to explore the links between curriculum, engagement, motivation and behaviour
5.
Formulate proactive, preventative and responsive ways to facilitate the agency, empowerment and social development of young people in educational settings
