Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide preservice teachers with the skills and understanding to manage the resources required for teaching a variety of genres and multimodal texts aligned with the Australian Curriculum: English
  • Provide preservice teachers' opportunities to discern between the research‐based pedagogic practices to teach Australian English to students with a range of abilities and cultural backgrounds
  • Develop preservice teachers' knowledge about when and how to use a range of assessment and moderation practices that guide the teaching and learning of literacy and English
  • Encourage an enactment of socially just approaches to teaching English and literacy for primary students with a range of abilities and backgrounds, including ATSI students
  • Create opportunities for planning to undertake research on ‘own’ teaching practice
  • Deepen preservice teacher understandings of the key principles of unit planning in readiness for professional practice in a Primary Years classroom

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Interpret and discern the content and structures and the Standard/s of the Australian Curriculum: English ‐ and/or other authorised curriculum frameworks ‐ that support the sequencing of content for an English unit
2.
Select, prioritise and manage resources required for teaching a variety of genres and multimodal texts aligned with the Australian Curriculum: English
3.
Plan to enact the ongoing teaching of English and literacy in a primary classroom
4.
Propose and employ research‐based, socially‐just teaching strategies that cater for students with a range of abilities and backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
5.
Employ a range of assessment strategies, inclusive of moderation, for the purpose of providing feedback on literacy and English learning in a primary classroom
6.
Plan for research on ‘own’ practice and evaluate how that impacted your professional learning and improved student outcomes while undertaking Professional Experience.
