Overview

This topic is designed to develop specialised knowledge of the inter-curricula links between early childhood pedagogies, numeracy, multimodal literacies and teaching about technologies and design processes. Through a focus on the Technologies curriculum learning area, the topic will build on pre-service teachers’ broad understandings of literacy and mathematical knowledge centred around learning and teaching with multiliterate and numerate practices. Pre-service teachers (PSTs) will investigate strategies for implementing ICT and other technologies to expand learning opportunities around how society and cultures design and utilise technologies. Pre-service teachers will be expected to interpret the evolving body of research associated with the intersection between multimodal literacies, numeracy and technologies to justify their pedagogical approach. Considerations for exploring opportunities to extend professional learning reinforces the notion of a continuous approach to learning about technologies in a professional capacity.

Aims

This topic aims to:

Extend pre-service teacher confidence, knowledge and skills in technology learning and teaching
Enable pre-service teachers to develop an appropriate integrated program in multiliteracies, numeracy, technologies and design for children aged birth-8 years
Enhance pre-service teachers' personal approach to technologies teaching, based on their critical analysis of research and practical experiences. This analysis will draw on theoretical, Indigenous and cultural perspectives that have culturally and historically shaped civilization’s technological endeavours

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Apply critical self-knowledge that will form the foundation for their expert judgement when teaching Technologies

Critically analyse, adjust and document their teaching practice in response to an evolving body of research in numeracy, multimodal literacies and technologies teaching and learning

Demonstrate an advanced capacity to plan, analyse and implement a range of approaches to numeracy, literacies and technologies, including play-based pedagogies

Critique teaching and learning resources and synthesise their understandings of the relationship between play, teaching, learning and assessment to generate effective learning across numeracy, multimodal literacies and technologies
