Aims

Structural engineering includes the analysis and design of structures that resist applied loads. It is important for all civil engineers to understand the range of concepts, calculations and procedures used for safe design and construction of a variety of structures. This topic provides students with an understanding of the concepts associated with structural engineering and focuses mainly on structural mechanics, structural design and computer software packages.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Understand how to determine internal member forces for 2D frames

Perform advanced structural mechanic calculations for determining forces, deflections and slopes for statically determinate and indeterminate beams, frames and trusses
3.
Determine influence lines for moving loads on beams and trusses
4.
Have a thorough understanding of 2D and 3D structural analysis software for application of structural mechanics to large scale structures
5.
Determine structural design actions according to Australian Standards
6.
Perform advanced Australian Standard structural engineering design procedures applicable to steel columns, beams and bolted or welded connections
7.
Perform advanced Australian Standard structural engineering design procedures applicable to reinforced concrete beams, columns and slabs
8.
Have a thorough understanding of 3D structural design software for design of a steel structure that adheres to the Australian Standards
