Aims
This topic aims to provide students with a theoretical understanding of the normal and integrated range of physiological responses to exercise and performance training within cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, nervous, endocrine, metabolic and immune systems. Students will develop skills associated with the testing and analysis of submaximal and maximal field and laboratory tests, with an emphasis on the assessment of energy transfer system capacities.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Describe and evaluate the function, regulation and interaction of physiological systems relating to exercise and the individual and integrated physiological responses and adaptations to acute and chronic exercise under normal conditions
2.
Analyse and design a broad range of exercise modalities to maintain and/or improve health, fitness, wellbeing and performance that consider physiological responses and adaptations to acute and chronic exercise
3.
Select appropriate exercises and equipment to suit the needs, goals, and abilities of clients including consideration of social determinants of health
4.
Select and safely conduct laboratory and field tests to assess physiological components of performance (aerobic, anaerobic, maximal and submaximal), and analyse, interpret and compare physiological data between time points, individuals and populations
5.
Identify and explain the common contraindications and associated risks for participation in exercise and understand when onward referrals are warranted
6.
Interpret, explain, and analyse subjective and objective data obtained during a client assessment to safely prescribe, deliver, and monitor performance and exercise-based interventions
