Aims

The topic is aimed at students who are interested in broadening their understanding of AI and its application to international law. This topic will therefore involve both a horizontal and a vertical analysis of AI through an international legal and ethical lens. Horizontal domains of interest include data protection law, competition law, business and consumer law, intellectual property law, human rights law, international humanitarian law and AI governance. Vertical analysis of AI considers its application within law enforcement, military, healthcare, finance and the legal sector. Students will be presented with a series of case studies to help them understand these issues. After completing this topic, students should be able to apply these principles and case studies to novel legal and ethical challenges in AI.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Investigate the key technical features of AI platforms
2.
Evaluate legal and ethical issues concerning the use of AI platforms in specific domains
3.
Assess how legal and ethical challenges can be understood in practice involving AI platforms using case studies
4.
Critically appraise these ethical and legal issues and appraise the adequacy of potential solutions
