This topic provides an opportunity to develop a practical understanding of the use of the “Skilled Helper” problem-solving and management model to assist clients in working towards their desired outcomes using Motivational Interviewing. Students will develop an understanding of the change process, the role of the therapeutic relationship, and self-awareness.

Aims

This topic aims to provide students with understanding of problem solving in relation to counselling and opportunities for logical and critical thinking in relation to a counselling client. This topic also prepares graduates to operate as a counsellor in multiple settings, and reflect cultural sensitivity and have a respect for multiple points of view.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Formulate responses to client issues based on an understanding of basic counselling interventions
2.
Evaluate the strengths and limitations of the “Skilled Helper” problem-solving and management model in order to effectively apply it to issues presented in counselling practice
3.
Analyse the linkage between counselling interventions and client outcomes
