Aims

This topic aims to prepare the student with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to care for women experiencing a pre-existing or arising medical complexity of pregnancy, labour and birth and/or the postnatal period.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Apply the knowledge of pathophysiology and pharmacology of pre-existing and arising medical conditions to evidenced based midwifery practice
2.
Examine the management of medical complexities from preconception to the postnatal period
3.
Provide rationales for informed decision making and evidenced based midwifery care of the childbearing woman requiring high dependency maternity care
4.
Differentiate and interpret investigations and diagnostic tests that may be ordered for the woman with complex medical needs
5.
Critically appraise the roles of multi-disciplinary care team and collaborative practice in evidenced based clinical midwifery practice

Assumed knowledge

Foundational knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and medication management, and midwifery skills for the care of the woman without complexities during pregnancy, birth and the post-natal period.
