Overview
This topic, which is divided into four modules, addresses the principles of pharmacology, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics as they apply to the pre-hospital setting. Opportunities exist through clinical case to apply these principles in determining the impact of disease states, lifestyle choices and life stages on drug therapy. Aims
This topic aims to develop a broad conceptual understanding of pharmacology and therapeutics by building a foundation of knowledge of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. This knowledge will then underpin critical analysis of the impact of life stages and disease states on drug therapy and will be complemented by an understanding of drug safety issues as they relate to pre-hospital care.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Describe links between core pharmacological principles and the therapeutic use of drugs in the pre-hospital setting
2.
Integrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology as it relates to drug therapy
3.
Describe the implications of polypharmacy, illicit drug use and complementary medicines on clinical practice in the pre-hospital setting
4.
Explain the rationale and implications associated with the use of drugs for the emergency management of patients in the pre-hospital setting
5.
Demonstrate proficiency in drug calculations relevant to drug administration by paramedics
