Aims

This topic aims to:  

  • Introduce students to a range of different feminist approaches
  • Offer students opportunities to survey a range of debates within and about feminism, including those that centre race, class, sexuality and gender diversity
  • Enable students to illustrate and contextualise feminist thought with reference to a number of contemporary issues and debates about gender relations in Australia and globally
  • Enhance students' oral and written communication skills

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Distinguish different feminist theories and approaches

Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of competing feminist perspectives

Breakdown a range of contemporary issues to identify the gender relations at play

Evaluate the applicability of competing feminist perspectives to interpersonal, cultural, social and political worlds

Discuss issues arising from debates relating to contemporary feminist thought using ideas generated within the topic
