Overview

This topic is designed to provide Preservice teachers the knowledge and skills to teach a range of multi‐modal texts to middle/secondary students that align with the literacy continuum in the Australian Curriculum; comprehending texts through listening, reading and viewing; and composing texts through speaking, writing and creating, across the following four knowledge areas, text knowledge; grammar knowledge; word knowledge and visual knowledge. Preservice teachers will develop an understanding of how to attend to the distinctive literacy demands in curriculum design, in their respective teaching areas, through exploring language features, textual concepts and structures of digital and material texts. Preservice teachers also explore how ICT – as a General Capability ‐ intersects with text production for middle and secondary students.

Aims

This topic aims to:

Introduce preservice teachers to evidence‐informed Literacy and ICT research and approaches
Prepare preservice teachers to address the literacy needs of diverse learners
Support preservice teachers’ readiness for Professional Experience
Encourage an enactment of socially just approaches to teaching ICT and literacy for diverse middle‐secondary students
Provide preservice teachers the opportunities to produce and critique a range of multi‐modal texts
