Overview

In this topic, you will learn about the state-of-the-art knowledge of plant functional responses to diverse abiotic stresses. This knowledge is critical for understanding the way plants adapt to their environment, both under natural and agricultural conditions. You will gain an understanding of key physiological, biochemical pathways with molecular and â€Ĥ For more content click the Read More button below.

Aims

This topic aims to provide students with a broad understanding of plant functional responses to negative impact of various climatic and soil factors in the environment. The students will gain insights into molecular mechanisms that govern plant functional responses. Student will be introduced to major plant groups and their characteristics, ecology and human uses and gain an understanding of the nature and diversity of vegetation ecosystems and their function. They will study ecological processes that underlie how communities assemble and breakdown.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Explain what constitutes plant stress and strategies plants employ to overcome stress
2.
Demonstrate understanding of latest developments into plant responses to water, light, salinity and nutrient stress
3.
Explain key techniques in modern plant physiology and how these are being used to improve plant growth and productivity and what are their limitations
4.
Examine the value of vegetation ecosystems in supplying ecosystem services and ecosystem functions
5.
Analyse a range of ecological processes underlying vegetation assembly and degradation
6.
Evaluate scientific research critically and communicate critique with professional scientists
7.
Construct and present logical arguments in an oral debate or discussion on a scientific topic
