Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce students to a range of key concepts and debates about policing and law enforcement
  • Place modern police organisations into context regarding diverse approaches to social control in Western society
  • Examine the different police functions and the nature of police organisations and police personnel, to encourage reflection upon and challenge current knowledge and perceptions of police/policing
  • Explore and critique current and future trends in law enforcement
