Concurrently, this topic prepares pre-service teachers for their Professional Experience placements at Flinders University. It introduces the expectations of professional behaviour for the teaching profession, including legal and ethical responsibilities. The lecture series is an essential pre-requisite for placement in school and centre settings. A 5-day community placement introduces pre-service teachers to an Early Childhood setting and allows them to make links between theory, practice and university learning.

Aims
This topic aims to:
- Inquire into the relationship between practical experience, research and theory regarding young children's play, teaching and learning
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of the importance of play for young children's learning
- Practice observational and analytic skills in relation to children's learning
- Critically analyse teachers' decision-making using diverse theoretical perspectives regarding play, teaching and learning
- Recognise the requirements of the Professional Experience program, including professional expectations and the legal and ethical responsibilities of a pre-service teacher
- Collaborate with children and practising early childhood educators to observe and support young children's learning
