Overview

In this topic, research‐informed practices of teaching Australian English in primary classrooms are explored. This topic is taught in the context of the Australian Curriculum, where English is built across three interrelated strands ‐ Language, Literature and Literacy. The topic is designed to develop pre‐service teachers’ knowledge and skills for teaching primary students’ how to read, comprehend and produce multimodal texts. Pre‐service teachers sequence content as they plan to teach and assess primary students with a range of diverse abilities and backgrounds, including those who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Pre‐service teachers also consider the expectations of the community beyond the school gate (i.e. parents and carers).

Aims

This topic aims to:

Introduce pre‐service teachers to the Australian Curriculum: English, Literacy as a General Capability and literacies as embedded in the everyday practices of primary students
Explore current research around reading, comprehending and producing texts multi‐modally
Develop pre‐service teachers’ pedagogical practices to guide the teaching of reading and writing in contemporary primary classrooms
Develop pre‐service teachers’ capacity to know and sequence curriculum content in English and literacy
Introduce current practices and debates around literacy assessment
Cultivate socially just approaches to teaching English and literacy, and consider the expectations of community (i.e. parents and carers)
