Overview

This topic provides a detailed look at how a design process of discovery can be purposefully integrated with scientific innovation and entrepreneurial thinking. Building on everyday science knowledge, play and inquiry processes are used to create solutions underpinned by scientific concepts that help to build a future world. Through a focused look at integrating Chemical and Physical Sciences curriculum content with the skills of inquiry and design, supported by General Capabilities including ICT; this topic looks at the strong links between environmental and manufactured objects and materials. Focusing on the processes and production skills of construction, this topic provides inter‐curricular teaching strategies for innovating and building a future world. This topic will highlight the ways children discover when thinking with real‐world problems seeking innovative solutions, both intentional and incidental. Supported by English and Technologies curricula, this topic will demonstrate methods commonly used in science can be analysed for enhancing opportunities across age groups and site/schools.

Aims

This topic aims to:

Enhance confidence, knowledge, and skills of pre‐service teachers in Physical and Chemical Sciences with a strong ICT perspective and supported by inter‐curriculum links where appropriate
Promote skills of pre‐service teachers in using systems thinking for developing a series of learning experiences, units, and cross‐site/school plans and development for leading a site/school approach
Develop the critical analysis skills of pre‐service teachers in evaluating case studies by peers and considering teaching construction (engineering) in a future world with various materials and exploring ways of moving

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Examine the range of age‐appropriate skills and curriculum General Capabilities relevant to science learning

Explore the roles of resources and tools for building with a range of materials through constructive practices to demonstrate movement and force

Create and document prototype designs with everyday materials

Discuss how the movement of objects varies, can produce light, heat, and sound, and moves through forces and electrical energies

Design a series of learning experiences which challenge children to solve real‐world problems and share with peers for feedback

Plan for professional learning needs surrounding science learning and teaching practices, including leadership perspectives
