Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce curriculum knowledge and pedagogical applications in modern languages
  • Review and evaluate the methodological principles and strategies involved in a constructivist, integrated, task based, learner centred pedagogy
  • Explore teaching for outcomes through education for sustainability in the languages classroom

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Identify and critique key elements of policy documents in the languages area, including language education for a sustainable future in the integrated curriculum
2.
Critique a variety of learning strategies and resources appropriate for use in the teaching of modern languages
3.
Plan and design lessons and units of work for the early, primary and middle years of languages learning
4.
Critique constructivist teaching principles and pedagogical models with the aim of implementing a learner centred pedagogy
5.
Identify and critique issues in modern language pedagogy including literacy and integrated curriculum concerns
6.
Plan and design a range of assessment tasks and demonstrate competence in assessment of and for learning
7.
Evaluate lessons with a view to understanding the key features of successful constructivist languages pedagogy
