Overview
This topic provides an introduction to the nature and purposes of curriculum studies in teaching specialist areas. It develops preservice teachers’ (PSTs) knowledge, skills and understandings in designing teaching and learning programs within contemporary understandings of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. The focus is particularly on the Middle Years of schooling.

Aims
This topic aims to:
- Develop preservice teachers’ knowledge of the concepts, substance, structure and teaching strategies in a Middle Years teaching area
- Introduce preservice teachers to relevant curriculum policy and curriculum frameworks
- Extend preservice teachers’ understanding of learning design processes, including curriculum, pedagogical strategies and assessment
- Support preservice teachers in developing effective teaching and learning sequences
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Demonstrate understanding of Middle Schooling contexts in relation to learning design processes

Apply an emerging depth of knowledge of the concepts, substance, structure and teaching strategies in a teaching area, to learning design processes
3.
Organise teaching area content into an effective learning and teaching sequence
4.
Evaluate the role of a range of curriculum policies and approaches, in relation to learning design processes
5.
Apply and evaluate a range of pedagogical strategies to learning design
6.
Design teaching and learning sequences that cater for student diversity
