Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop awareness and understanding of the aims of intercultural language teaching and the pedagogical applications possible in modern languages studies for the Primary Years
  • Introduce teaching strategies for encouraging intercultural competence in the languages classroom through the study of the connectedness of language and culture
  • Develop pre-service teachers’ capacity to align curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in the learning area of Languages
  • Develop pre-service teachers’ capacity to evidence their expert content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge and plan highly effective classroom teaching and capacity to design an effective sequence of lessons and plan strategies to evidence, evaluate and improve the impact of their teaching on student learning
  • Enhance pre-service teachers’ understanding of the assessment, recording and reporting cycle in the Languages curriculum

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Identify and critique the key features of intercultural language teaching
2.
Design and plan units, lessons and tasks incorporating relevant intercultural multimodal teaching and learning strategies
3.
Plan for learning and assessment, recording and reporting in the learning area of Languages through well-developed pedagogical reasoning and disciplinary knowledge and skills
4.
Assess, evaluate and report all elements of language teaching
5.
Evaluate lessons with a view to understanding the key features of successful learner centred, text type teaching in languages pedagogy
6.
Plan strategies to evidence, evaluate and improve the impact of your teaching of the Languages curriculum on student learning
