Aims
This topic aims to:
- Explore the concept of family, the application of a systems theory approach and the value of a social ecological model in relation to families with a child living with a disability
- Examine the impact of having a child living with a disability on family members, family functioning, and life‐stage transitions
- Examine the Indigenous and multicultural variables associated with parenting a child living with a disability
- Examine the family support needs and the role of professionals in meeting these needs, within the context of a developing professional partnership
- Explore evidence‐informed research on high‐quality family and professional partnerships
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Apply a systems theory approach in designing a family/professional partnership plan designed to support enhanced outcomes for a child or young person living with a disability
2.
Integrate the principles of effective professional partnerships in working with families with a child living with a disability and other professionals to effectively engage parents in a site‐based education program
3.
Critically evaluate evidence‐informed research to support effective transition planning for families with a child living with a disability
4.
Appraise ethical and legal issues associated with working in partnership with families, in particular indigenous and/or culturally diverse families to develop personal principles for professional practice
5.
Formulate approaches to engage with other professionals and professional networks to ensure access to relevant support services and resources for self and families with a child living with a disability
