Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce the concepts of electrical energy systems and the processes of energy conversion
  • Study the analysis, operation and design of common electrical energy systems, such as transformers, motors, machines and driving circuitry

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Evaluate, and apply the principles of electrical energy conversion on the modern electrical machines and drives
2.
Critique the construction, principles of operation and application of common electrical machines and drives
3.
Evaluate the applications, limitations and minimum standard requirements necessary for correct installations and run of power electronic devices like VSDs used in electrical energy systems
4.
Justify and conclude usage of the electrical machines and associated drives in the context of everyday engineering practice and communicate in writing desired outcomes to wider audience
