This topic provides a further introduction to academic English while developing students’ underlying English skills. Students continue to review the fundamentals of sentence structure and grammar while learning the key aspects of organisation, style and use of language.

Aims
In the reading component, students are introduced to making predictions about text content, and develop their skimming and scanning skills for text orientation and identifying important features of the text such as main ideas or specific language, as well as reading for information.
In writing component, students are introduced to academic writing by reviewing sentence and paragraph structure; studying different types of writing tasks, and learning about basic aspects of organisation, style and use of language. As part of academic writing, students study effective planning, including note-taking and outlining paragraphs.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Identify main ideas of paragraphs and longer texts (200 – 500 words)
2.
Scan texts to locate relevant details to complete a specific task (e.g. to answer true/false questions)
3.
Recognise supporting ideas and specific information such as statistics and time references, and definitions or explanations
4.
Recognise simple cohesive language or devices in a text
5.
Understand relationships in a text such as cause and effect, comparison and contrast, or process
6.
Use contextual clues to guess the meaning of new words
7.
Demonstrate an understanding of academic vocabulary appropriate for this level (matched to the CEFR B1 level vocabulary)
8.
Accurately use a range of grammar up to and including CEFR B1 level to express ideas appropriate to the topic and task
9.
Use a basic range of linking words and other simple cohesive devices to demonstrate and develop the relationships between ideas and increase cohesion
10.
Demonstrate appropriate choice of vocabulary at CEFR B1 level, including word classes, to express ideas suitable to the topic and task
11.
Develop a clear argument in a defined writing task
12.
Accurately use a range of grammar up to and including CEFR B1 level to express ideas suitable to the topic and task
