Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Examine key events in the history of British settlement in North America and to provide students with an awareness of the social and political development of the early colonies
  • Consider the ways that British imperialism and notions of the Atlantic World influenced the development of the American colonies
  • Critically assess the ways that issues relating to race, sex, class, and religion were experienced in early America
  • Equip students with an understanding of the context in which the American Revolution took place
  • Consolidate students' ability to analyse and assess different types of historical sources
  • Consolidate students' ability to work independently
  • Develop students writtten and communication skills
