Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Analyse the international legal framework governing space activities
  • Provide an understanding of domestic and international legal principles and rules applicable to Australian commercial space operators
  • Interrogate existing legal and governance responses to the problems of space debris and space traffic management
  • Evaluate legal and governance debates on access to space, decolonisation of space and space infrastructure, and democratisation of space
  • Reflect critically on the legal ramifications of outer space as an inherently dual use domain and the interactions between commercial/civil activities and military/security activities
  • Propose ways in which Australia can take a lead in solving the legal and/or governance issues discussed throughout the topic
