Aims
This topic aims to:
- Introduce students to some of the methodological approaches required for some of the current high priority areas of biomedical research
- Provide opportunities for students to use statistical software to undertake standard statistical analyses which are routinely encountered in biomedical research
- Provide opportunities for students to engage in authentic biomedical laboratory work related to topical medical problems
- Gain the understanding of the role of biomedical research in clinical practice and modern society
- Provide opportunities for critical appraisal and presentation of scientific evidence
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Identify and implement relevant statistical analyses using statistical software to analyse and interpret biological data
2.
Identify high priority areas of biomedical research, their purpose, limitations, and significance for human health
3.
Recognise that various methodological approaches are needed in biomedical research and diagnostic laboratories to address current medical problems
4.
Reflect on the important role of medical science in clinical practice and modern society
5.
Perform laboratory techniques to synthesise scientific data, then use the information to communicate in a scientific manner to others both individually or as part of a team

Assumed knowledge
Knowledge of first-year biology and chemistry including basic laboratory skills such as can be found in BIOL1102 Molecular Basis of Life and CHEM1201 General Chemistry.
