Aims

This topic aims to assist students to:

  • Understand the issues of significance related to young clients or clients disabilities in a counselling context
  • Be familiar with the relevant ethical issues that may arise when working in different settings and the laws that could prevent certain actions in some counselling settings
  • Understand the process and nature of trauma and stressor related disorders
  • Understand the experience, reactions and outcome of normal, integrated, and pathological grief
  • Be aware of the major categories of disorders according to the DSM-V

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Identify and refer mental health issues experienced by a variety of client populations

Be familiar with case management based on an in-depth understanding of relevant counselling approaches in a multicultural context

Analyse complex ethical, legal, and boundary considerations in counselling practice

Evaluate and implement the therapeutic change process for various demographics and populations of clients
