Aims

This topic will explore common conditions presenting in the pre-hospital environment through a discussion of the cause, pathophysiology, presentation and treatment of these disorders. The topic is divided into the following modules:

  • Immune-related disorders and sepsis
  • Impaired tissue perfusion and shock
  • Acute and chronic lung diseases
  • Environment-related emergencies
  • Paediatric medical emergencies

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Outline the key pathological and pathophysiological elements involved in the development of illness and disease across the lifespan
2.
Integrate an applied understanding of human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to accurately interpret safe and effective patient management strategies for general medical diseases involving the immune and respiratory systems
3.
Integrate an applied understanding of human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to accurately interpret safe and effective patient management strategies for injury or illness resulting from impaired tissue perfusion, environmental insults, and diving and immersion emergencies
4.
Demonstrate safe and effective chest auscultation assessment practices
5.
Critically appraise evidence-based practice to resolve clinical challenges and make informed clinical judgements
6.
Build a strong foundational knowledge base of core paediatric physiological principles to underpin patient assessment and management strategies relevant to paramedicine
