Aims

This topic aims to address the social theories, perspectives and research in the study of ageing. The topic will specifically focus on the diversity in the older population resulting from differing behaviours, traditions, and attitudes towards ageing. Students will consider ageing from a multidisciplinary perspective, broaden their knowledge-base of the major social issues affecting ageing adults and an ageing society and examine their own attitudes and how attitudes can influence policy and practice. Students will also examine the rural ageing experience, contrasting this with urban ageing and will explore the significance of ethnicity in relation to ageing.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Identify and report on contemporary social issues in ageing societies
2.
Summarise key perspectives in social gerontology and demonstrate their value to understanding later life in the context of policy and practice
3.
Critique the positive discourse on ageing, identifying debates in relation to key concepts
4.
Explain the social context of death and dying and illustrate ways in which this impacts on supporting older people in practice
5.
Analyse the impact of culture and ethnicity, gender, geographic location & socioeconomic status on the experience of ageing
6.
Collaborate with older people to support individual, interpersonal and societal engagement needs to enhance healthy ageing and well-being in later life
7.
Assess, interpret and apply research evidence in relation to informing the development of policy and practice
8.
Explain the social determinants of health in later life and the implications for healthy ageing in current and future generations of older people
