Aims
This topic aims to provide students with an insight into how and why reactions occur and what drives particular outcomes of reactions. Students will be exposed to discussions on what variables can be used to control chemical reactions and what techniques can be used to follow chemical reactions. The topic will give students an appreciation of the measurement of both the rate of a chemical reaction and the energy flow during the chemical reaction.
The topic also aims to introduce fundamental concepts in electrochemistry and quantum chemistry.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Apply chemical concepts as outlined in the topic description.
2.
Develop useful generic and scientific skills in Chemistry and expand the chemical intuition for type of reactions or chemical transformations relevant to concepts outlined in the topic syllabus
3.
Refine skills in handling chemicals, apparatus and instrumentation relevant to concepts outlined in the topic syllabus.
4.
Refine communication skills, skills in solving problems and build self-confidence.
5.
Improve independent study and problem solving skills.
