Overview

Children and young people in educational settings may require particular attention at different times to support their academic engagement and progress, behaviour, and/or mental health and wellbeing. Rather than waiting until children experience difficulties requiring intensive intervention, contemporary approaches to student support emphasise a coordinated, flexible continuum of responses. This topic introduces preservice teachers to multi‐tiered systems of support approaches (MTSS), which incorporate (1) deliberate efforts to promote engagement and skill‐development for all students, and prevent academic, social and behavioural difficulties; (2) targeted, more intensive supports for students at risk or beginning to experience difficulties; and (3) specialised supports for students requiring more tailored responses. Preservice teachers will examine MTSS as a collaborative framework for inclusive and specialised education.

Aims

This topic aims to:

Introduce preservice teachers to inclusive policies, practices and learning environments that embody a strengths‐based approach and empower children, families and local communities
Cultivate a foundational understanding of multi‐tiered systems of support (MTSS) as a framework for inclusive and specialised education across academic, social and behavioural domains
Encourage the development of critical, creative, reflective and collaborative understandings of teachers’ work with diverse students within a human rights framework
Provide preservice teachers with a historical perspective on the education of students with special educational needs
