Aims

The topic aims to:

  • Develop the mathematical thinking and knowledge of pre‐service teachers
  • Invite pre‐service teachers to participate and critically reflect upon the effectiveness of learning experiences in developing children’s early conceptual understandings in mathematics
  • Give pre‐service teachers opportunities to plan teaching and learning sequences
  • Invite pre‐service teachers to reflect upon their own mathematical knowledge and to consider professional learning needs and opportunities

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Implement effective strategies to assess children’s mathematical knowledge
2.
Moderate samples of children’s mathematical thinking and representations, justifying reasons supported by the Numeracy Progressions and similar
3.
Describe practical examples of how to capture and document children’s mathematical thinking and conceptual understanding
4.
Plan logical teaching and learning sequences through the application of understandings of children’s early mathematical thinking
5.
Articulate ways to further develop their mathematical content knowledge through professional learning
