The topic explores current theoretical frameworks and teaching practice in Australia, through inter-disciplinary and Indigenous knowledge systems. To address AITSL Standards 1.4 and 2.4, students will develop a deeper understanding of the complexities Indigenous peoples experience in the Australian education system. The topic will assist students to make an ongoing commitment to becoming a critical, reflexive and more effective teacher of Indigenous students.

Aims
This topic aims to:
Prepare preservice teachers to teach Indigenous Australian students in rural and urban contexts, while supporting all students to understand and support Indigenous sovereignty.
- Introduce preservice teachers to understandings of the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and perspectives.
- Develop critical understanding of contemporary Indigenous Australian education policy
- Raise awareness of the power relations inherent in constructions of ‘race’, racism, and whiteness in Australia, and how these phenomena impact on contemporary education policy
- Develop respect for the histories, cultures and perspectives of Indigenous communities
- Explore culturally sensitive and inclusive pedagogy that demonstrates skills and knowledge to become an effective teacher of Indigenous students
- Develop a critical disposition for teaching all students in ways that support Indigenous sovereignty and reconciliation
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Investigate race relations in Australia from 1788 to the present

Reflect on your cultural positioning and educational experiences and examine how these understandings shape your knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Identify and plan effective teaching strategies for Indigenous Australians and their non-indigenous peers

Critically analyse resources for classroom/curriculum use
5.
Implement skills in working collaboratively
6.
Present and articulate an appropriately referenced academic argument
