This topic develops the Middle Years curriculum knowledge required for preservice teachers’ Teaching Area 1, as identified on the study plan.

Aims
This topic aims to:
- Develop preservice teachers’ knowledge of the concepts, substance, structure and teaching strategies in a teaching area
- Further develop preservice teachers’ understanding of relevant curriculum policy and curriculum frameworks
- Continue to extend preservice teachers’ understanding of learning design processes, including curriculum, pedagogical strategies, assessment and evaluation
- Support preservice teachers in developing effective teaching and learning sequences with a focus on embedding ICTs and literacy strategies
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Demonstrate an extended understanding of Middle Schooling contexts in relation to learning design processes
2.
Apply an emerging depth of knowledge of the concepts, substance, structure and teaching strategies in a teaching area, to learning design processes
3.
Organise teaching area content into an effective learning and teaching sequence
4.
Engage with assessment moderation processes to support consistent and comparable judgements of student learning
5.
Employ a range of pedagogical strategies to learning design, including embedding ICTS and literacy strategies
6.
Design teaching and learning sequences that cater for student diversity with a focus on creating and maintaining supportive and safe learning environments
