Overview

This topic comprises 10 single-day visits and a full-time 6-week placement (total 40 days) which immerses pre-service teachers in a metropolitan or country early childhood setting, different to experience in 3640. Emphasis is placed on the pre-service teacher’s reflexivity and continuing professional practice. Sustained attention is given to the planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching programs which clearly demonstrate a sound understanding of the complexities of teaching young children. Informed by contemporary Australian and international Early Childhood research and practice, pre-service teachers make a meaningful contribution to the site by creating and implementing an inquiry that supports children’s learning. The Teaching Performance Assessment tasks evidence the pre-service teacher’s achievements of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) at the Graduate level. At the conclusion of this teaching experience, judgements are made about the pre-service teacher’s readiness to become a registered teacher in the early childhood teaching profession.

Aims

This topic aims to:

Make a meaningful contribution to children's learning and the setting's curriculum goals and priorities that draws from contemporary Australian and international research and practice
Provide students with an understanding of how children learn and develop through research and inquiry that implements research and theoretical knowledge and makes a meaningful contribution to the site and children's learning
Allow students to evaluate a variety of observation and assessment techniques to gain insight into the types of experiences, activities and ideas that engage young children
Support students as they analyse, plan, implement, evaluate and document a curriculum that involves and engages children in deep and meaningful learning over an extended period of time
Support students as they prioritise the importance of families in children's lives and learning and innovate on ways to connect with families and the community
Help students document and organise evidence of their developing professional knowledge, professional practice and professional relationships in line with the Teaching Performance Assessments
