Aims

This topic aims to develop in students an advanced and practical understanding of civil design, through studying and applying:

  • Methodologies for developing solutions to complex and ill-defined civil engineering design problems
  • The integration of theory and methods across the range of civil engineering subjects
  • The assessment and evaluation of engineering designs
  • Techniques for determining design specifications from clients, eg the social, political, international, economic and environmental context of a problem as well as the technical requirements
  • Project management and documentation methods and tools in the civil engineering context
  • The variety of roles in civil engineering design groups, eg teamwork, leadership and mentoring
  • Creativity, innovation and self-reflection

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
