Overview

The topic introduces students to the fundamentals of computer networks and cybersecurity. Students will study the principles, standards, processes and technologies associated with computer networking and data communications, and the cybersecurity vulnerabilities associated with these. The topic introduces students to the fundamentals of computer networks and cybersecurity. Students will study the principles, standards, processes and technologies associated with computer networking and data communications, and the cybersecurity vulnerabilities associated with these. This will include the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, network protocols, network communication, network classifications, aspects of communications cybersecurity, vulnerabilities, threats, threats control tools, monitoring tools, incidence response, basic of cryptography, and legal and ethical issues, and emerging networking technologies and its associated threats.

Aims

This topic aims to cover the knowledge and skills needed to successfully handle the task, duties and responsibilities of an associate level cybersecurity analyst.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of various network architecture models, protocols, and functionalities

Apply advanced analytical skills to thoroughly examine and evaluate the functioning of network protocols, services, and performance characteristics

Employ advanced analysis, assessment, and controls to mitigate network vulnerabilities, threats, and risks, to ensure network system integrity and confidentiality

Analyse the influence of cryptography on network security monitoring, including its impact on data protection, authentication, and secure communication protocols

Analyse various techniques to examine network intrusion data to accurately identify compromised hosts

Utilise incident response models to effectively manage network security and mitigates risks

Research and evaluate the cybersecurity threats for a selection of emerging technologies to provide informed insights and risk mitigation strategies
