Aims
This topic aims to:
- Explore the place of slavery in the United States and analyse the sectional differences between the North and the South
- Examine the political and social pressures that existed in nineteenth century American society and consider the context in which the Civil War took place
- Set out the main features and the nature of the Civil War
- Consider the aftermath of the War, specifically focusing on the issue of race relations and the Reconstruction era
- Analyse the place of the Civil War in American history and culture
- Consolidate students' ability to analyse and assess different types of sources
- Provide a learning context in which students hone their collaboration skills in a mutually respectful atmosphere
- Further develop students written and communication skills
