Overview

This topic is designed to enhance students' knowledge of the forces that shape Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' health. The topic will examine how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' health is currently addressed within the Australian health care system, and what is required for more-effective health practice, with the opportunity for students to contextualise their personal and professional understanding of health and illness within an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' health context. Students will be able to describe cultural and social determinants of health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and apply rights and strengths-based understandings of health and wellbeing.

Aims

This topic aims to develop skills in Health Sciences students to be effective and holistic practitioners, who are also advocates for best practice when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Identify and critique deficit-based, othering, and racist language used to construct discourses of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and health

Apply strengths-based approaches to provision of health services with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Use a strengths-based and respectful vocabulary when discussing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, cultures, and health

Identify and critically discuss Australian social systems and structures which create and maintain health inequities impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Describe cultural safety and its role in person-centred health care when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People

Apply cultural capabilities within a cultural safety framework
