Overview

This topic introduces students to Kaurna language renaissance. It explores the successful reclamation of Kaurna language and expression. Students will be introduced to intellectual, philosophical, and political dimensions of Kaurna worldviews. It offers opportunities to learn about key people and places of significance including Kaurna heritage sites and commemorative parks with dual naming. Through mapping Kaurna Country, its water ways, plains, coastal environments, and foothills the topic uncovers deep stories of Kaurna spirituality, resilience, continuity, and language. The topic celebrates and recognises original place names and connection to geographical features and places and will be an important way to progress reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Adelaide (Kaurna Country).

Aims

This topic aims to:

Provide students with the historical and contemporary context of Kaurna culture identity and language revivals
Introduce students to concepts of Kaurna philosophies, political and social governance
Introduce students to Kaurna language sounds, common expression, and resources for ongoing learning
Raise awareness of Kaurna traditional owner groups and community organisation
Examine the social and cultural constructs of Trans language and Aboriginal English in 21st Century
