Aims
The aim of this topic is:
- For students to plan and manage the care of women and neonates with complex and emergency needs in the antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal and neonatal areas of midwifery practice.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Detect, assess, and manage medical and obstetric complexities and emergencies during pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal and neonatal periods within the scope of midwifery practice
2.
Demonstrate competency in escalation, consultation with and where indicated, referral to the multidisciplinary team in response to clinical concerns
3.
Appraise and integrate knowledge of research evidence to inform clinical decision-making and enhance the provision of woman-centred care
4.
Analyse and evaluate guidelines, policies, and standards compared to evidence generated through research to inform in the provision of safe, high-quality individualised care for the woman, fetus and/or neonate experiencing complexities and emergencies
5.
Describe and interpret investigations and diagnostic tests that may be offered to the woman, fetus, and/or neonate experiencing complex or emergency care
