Aims

This topic aims to introduce the fundamentals of Cell Biology and explain the basics of life at the cellular level. Students will explore the construction, components and maintenance of cells and will gain a basic understanding of how the structure and composition of cells relate to their function. Students will apply their knowledge during team-based learning to explore how fundamentals of cell biology relates to disease and can be used to understand underlying course of disease.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Describe the structure and composition of cells and relate their structure to their function
2.
Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of how different cellular compartments and organelles assist cellular functions
3.
Recognise that there are a range of factors that control cell growth and cell division
4.
Apply knowledge of cell biology to understand how cells correct mistakes
5.
Apply knowledge of cell biology to problem solving, specifically how faulty cellular functions relate to disease
