Overview

This topic gives students the novice understanding of the supply, design and manufacture of various optical appliances including spectacle lenses and optical equipment. It also provides the knowledge and skills to measure, verify and dispense optical appliances, enabling them to perform these tasks to an intermediate level.

Aims

The aim of this topic is to provide students with:

  • A consolidated method for applying optical theory clinically particularly with regard to the correction of refractive error
  • Knowledge of how optical appliances are used in optometric practice
  • The required clinical skills to measure and dispense spectacle lenses in optometry practice

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Apply optical theory to the measurement and correction of refractive error and solve optical calculations relevant to optometry practice
2.
Demonstrate the accurate use of optical instruments to an intermediate level, obtain the relevant measurements for ophthalmic dispensing and correctly interpret the results found
3.
Explain the optical principles of selected optical instruments
4.
Effectively communicate the dispensing options and recommendations to retail staff and patients
5.
Formulate an optical dispensing plan based on the patients needs and relevant clinical data
