Aims

This topic aims to: 

  • Support students to continue the development of the skills relevant to speech pathology practice
  • Facilitate students to develop further understanding of typical communication and swallowing skills across a range of age groups, diverse populations and contexts 
  • Support students to begin  developing an applied understanding of the range of competencies necessary in developing clinical competence
  • Support students to develop foundational professional practice skills such as clinical reasoning, effective interpersonal communication, reflective practice and lifelong learning

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Demonstrate developing understanding of the professional standards of the discipline of speech pathology and how they are applied
2.
Use observation skills to identify typical communication and swallowing development in preschool and school aged children
3.
Use observation and appropriate information gathering techniques such as case history taking to identify typical communication and swallowing in older adults
4.
Demonstrate basic skills in establishing a professional relationship with clients of all ages and the use active listening and appropriate responsiveness
5.
Reflect on how a speech pathologist might consider the communication needs of culturally and linguistically diverse individuals
6.
Demonstrate developing professional behaviours, including, reasoning and critical thinking, effective professional communication (oral and written), reflective practice and lifelong learning
